UPHILL CYCLIST
The world is tilting
view compressed
stomach turns under
a lycra vest.
The brain is ready
all systems steady
for instant glory
and the coming test.
Birds fly
I envy them
in my earth down - trodden form
As I feel the tyres grip
and the frowning threat of storm.
The force that keeps the world in place
is central to the human race
and now here comes the inner vision
with this pathetic personal mission.
Soon the panoply unfolds
of vistas cast in greens and golds
as breath invites the outside in
a battle that the soul must win.
The world becomes a beckoning call
and out there is the hue and cry
of winner takes all
and this lithe machine says do or die.
The heart obeys an ancient dream
that resonates with older hills
where spears and knives were cast in fire
and still remains the upward desire.
I dare look back at the swaying road
as pedals take an extra load
for now I know
that nature dares
and the force will out
for he who cares.

Well spotted Colin. I was aware of "he who dares wins" and I find that a bit cheesy, so I reversed cares and dares. after all nature as an entity doesn't care (or is there a God?) That's for another day. I'm glad you spotted as the tyres grip as an impetus. I've been there and suffered - stick to the mtb . And I never wore lycra only cotton!!
