LONELY LABOURERS OF THE MEAN STREETS
We can sneer at the old ways now:
"over - engineered, wasted materials
too much man power used"
and we can worship the economist
who went on to prove a theory behind perfect glass
and helped to eradicate the working class.
a very worthy aim no doubt in the free for all
we now enjoy and call a sort of freedom.
and we can look up to the politician
manipulator of aspirations, uncomfortable
in the world that needs him.
We can rely on the accountant
whose logic has proved more effective
than the wrecker's ball.
Do not forget the lawyers - shape shifting
in their deployment of cause and effect.
Together they all pulled against the race
that shaped a world with their bravery
intimate duties and dedication
drudge and weariness, an example for us all
sentimental in their mean streets with their memories
cherished, treasured and infinitely sad
the lonely labourers in their tribal groups
hounded by their betters and preached at,
the lonely labourers in their mean streets.
with their tobacco, booze and love of glitz.
Spare them a thought as they sink buried beneath
the weight of the retail parks and the roundabouts
and the re - modelling of a new dawn. .

The sort of polemic I like Ray.
As I get older, I'm glad my father and his father aren't still around to see what they fought for.
