I TRIED TO REACH AN AUDIENCE

I tried to reach an audience       dreamed

of soaking them up      squeezing them dry

of all they could give me.

a parasite in love with need.

In the end I found my own,

surprisingly hollow like a drum with no sound

but a crying of thin hope

that flowed through my aching blood

and scared off all but the willing

of which there were few.

I tried to contain the audience

but they broke up in shallow waters

skittering away, shattered into fragments.

I faced the seats

another evening to taste

not to everyones'......

Then spotlight on and I see just a mirror

face to face with myself.

There never was an audience!

just shallow waters and the

threshing gasping and reaching out for a life.
