TOMORROW

TOMORROW

 Tomorrow is Remembrance Day

 The sea rises and falls

 A great abdomen

 Gasping for breath.

 We enjoy 'winter sun'

 Freakish for November

 But we don't complain

 They didn't either.

 Outside on the promenade

 Soldiers paraded

 Before leaving for France

 We have the old photos.

Here too a salute was taken

 Near where ice cream

 And hot dogs were sold

 In later years.

 But today the deck chairs

 Are folded

 The food kiosks

 Closed until spring.

 And from somewhere distant

 The insistent beat

Of a big drum drowns out

 The struggling waves.

Thanks Cynthia. I don't know which is more haunting, the crash of waves or the beat of a military drum.

Good one, David. I really like the opening and closing linkage. The metaphor seems, simultaneously, both subtle and strong. Not sure why.
