Richard III, Jamie Vardy, and all that: call for poems about Leicester

entry picture

Congratulations to Leicester City for winning the Premiership! But there's even more to Leicester than Richard III and the fairytale rise to the top by its football team this season, spearheaded by goalscorer Jamie Vardy. And to prove the point, a call has gone out for poems about all aspects of Leicester for a new anthology.

Poems with a strong, recognisable link to the city are being sought by Dahlia Press, which plans to publish in October 2016. The anthology will be edited by Emma Lee and Ambrose Musiyiwa. Emma, who co-edited Over Land Over Sea: poems for those seeking refuge (Five Leaves, 2015), said: "What message would you give to others about Leicester? What is the story behind that message? Could you write a poem that shares an experience or aspect of Leicester City? Your poem could be about part of your life story, a family story, about your favourite place in Leicester, about a personality or celebrity with a strong link to Leicester or it could be about your relationship with the city, its people, features, landmarks, peculiarities or history." Poets themselves do not have to have a connection with Leicester.

Ambrose Musiyiwa facilitates CivicLeicester, a community media channel. His short stories have appeared in newspapers and magazines as well as in anthologies of contemporary Zimbabwean writing. Dahlia Publishing is a small press based in Leicester, and manages both The Asian Writer and Leicester Writes. It says: “Our diversity policy is at the heart of everything we do and we’re passionate about publishing regional and diverse writing.”

Poems for the new Leicester anthology should be 40 lines or less, in English and submitted by 15 July 2016 either by email to poetry@leicesterwrites.co.uk or by post to Welcome to Leicester, 36 Leybury Way, Scraptoft, Leicester LE7 9UB.

Didn't the Elephant Man hail from Leicester?

Maybe 'hail' is the wrong word...

And who can forget the famous Baby Squad, Leicester's hooligan firm?
