Arrested Development Haiku

A sea of faces

staring blankly in the dark;

will a haiku work?

I open my mouth,

so do the folk at the back;

my words drown in theirs.

I cannot punch them.

What would Ivor Cutler do?

I wither with verse,

amplify volume,

begin to shriek down the mic;

they match my ascent.

Spotlit abasement.

What would Alex Harvey do?

Decide to punch them

halfway through haiku.

A minute of fisticuffs,

then I continue.

999 call made;

inelegant stage diving

ensues, pursued by

cops the size of bears.

What would Willy Shakespeare do?

To be/Not to be

arrested.

Many thanks folks! Glad you enjoyed it - I'm quite enjoying writing some light-hearted stuff after such a heavy emotional slog lately :)

Wonderful and beyond my capability to add anything useful to what's been said.!
Yours with humility.

Laura,
I like the way that this properly executed Haiku form
allows the story to be told in a controlled manner. (and how
appropriate to both the form and the story that `arrested` is)...not to mention the humour...

Some night eh!...sounds like some of the nights we used to get at the old Liverpool Scene years ago.

Cheers Wolfgar

I really like the discipline actually - it's nowhere near as mind-bogglingly difficult as a sestina or a ghazal. They melt my brain. I find it sends you into places you wouldn't normally go.

Ah thank you Robert :) I haven't written haiku in too long, so thank YOU for the jogged elbow :)

And I wouldn't say you still had SO much to learn - from what I've read over the last couple of days, you're doing well alright!

Laura - I am in awe, not only of your dedication to structure in each stanza, but also of the cadence and rhythm so expertly crafted. I still have so much to learn!
