that tear

entry picture

I know that you don’t need me now
my world has changed
but that place remained
because I reserved it
put a little faded ticket on it
with your name on
I look to the horizon
and maybe a next life
where the tracks meet
longing is a powerful thing
feels like fire sometimes
in a bizarre way keeps you warm
they call it hope
they call it undying love
I like the way the world buffets me
sounds unlikely but it comforts
any pain is possible
when I know you are there
when you shared love
held the purity of something real
its difficult to let it go
cant be dropped
forever elevated
the fingers I used to touch
could beckon again
if I could change your mind
but that would be premature
I better let you come to me
hope the longing is more than just
this heart
I sometimes sketch your face
on empty tables
dodging round the gable ends of the world
the wet circles kiss and overlap
and then the barmaid mops them up
it’s a daydream I indulge often
thinking of you
I trundle on tracks full of cable cars
my way to work
all the people in the I-pod worlds
far from here
living out their lives
all trying to connect
all connected
heart hubs in romantic stations
its been going on forever
I’m not unique yet why does it feel
we were famous together?
and although this line is electric
there’s nothing wrong with daydreaming
about smoky meetings
in steam stations
soot in the eye to spark a dream of caring
nothing wrong with a mans tears
and no, I’m not pathetic for loving
it is real, just like all of us.
I reach journeys end
use my fingertip but wish for yours
push the salt water back into its corner
no mascara mark
briskly into work
I hope she remembers me
that tear?

its just some dust in my eye.

Thanks to all who left comments on this one, glad you like, I like, is nice.

Anthony yes you got it! you got the 'brief encounter' yes and the other songs seem to fit well. Seems its been written before.Nothing new under the sun perhaps. Or as Einstein said, its hiding the source.

"nothing wrong with a man's tears.." and even better if he is able to express himself like this.

Hi Pete,
I enjoyed this sad and wistful read very much. For me, (and I'm sure others will pick up on them too) it is so full of references to other works of the romantic/tragic genre - as if Tarantino had written a poem if you like! I admire this cross-referencing in your poetry, it allows us each to read something personal in what you write, helping us to identify emotionally with your sentiments by finding things in common.

The things it brought back to me were:

"I know that you don’t need me now"
(Chicago -"If you leave me now.")

"where the tracks meet"
The Doobie Brothers - "Long Train Runnin'."

"feels like fire sometimes"
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - "The Power of Love."

"the fingers I used to touch"
Diana Ross - "Touch Me in the Morning."

"if I could change your mind"
Gladys Knight and the Pips - "Baby Don't Change Your Mind."

"on empty tables"
from Les Miserables - "Empty Chairs At Empty Tables"

"I trundle on tracks full of cable cars"
film - "A Streetcar Named Desire."

"heart hubs in romantic stations"
"about smoky meetings
in steam stations"
"soot in the eye to spark a dream of caring"
Film - "Brief Encounter."

These are probably not your intended references, but they did it for me. Thanks for the nostalgic reminders, you've shown me up for the big softie that I am. Really enjoyed.

Regards,
A.E.

Some very profound sentiments in this...

Love these lines:
'any pain is possible
when I know you are there
when you shared love
held the purity of something real
its difficult to let it go
cant be dropped
forever elevated'

Tu sais toucher le coeur...
