I Thought I Knew You
I thought I knew you oh so well;
A kindred soul to meld with mine.
Your hand in mine so pure and right,
And lips so soft against my own,
When time itself would seem to pause
In moments of such wondrous joy.
Your words named my unspoken thoughts
Before my mind could give them voice;
And thus within my deepest core
I really thought I knew you well.
Then little things began to jar,
To draw me from that happiness;
And so despite my fondest hopes,
They sowed the quisling seeds of doubt
So fertile in my darkest fears,
Thriving in that imperfection
And strangling my once perfect world.
So though I thought I knew you well
I didn’t even know myself.
