Jackie Hagan at Puzzle Poets in Sowerby Bridge tonight
Poet, playwright and stand-up comic Jackie Hagan, who describes herself as “a one-legged cosmic scally who downs champagne from her glittery false leg”, is appearing at Puzzle Poets at the Blind Pig in Sowerby Bridge on Monday 5 September.
Hagan has been touring her award-winning show ‘Some People Have Too Many Legs’ for two years. She said: “It’s about the summer of 2013 when my foot suddenly went white and I spent the rest of the year in hospital. I eventually came out with one less leg and loads more perspective.”
Her stump “has a weird scar on it that looks like a mouth, so the most obvious thing to do (to me) was to draw some eyes on it and invent stump puppetry. I dress it up as various celebrities and the audience have to guess who it is, you can win a Fray Bentos Pie (or an onion for the vegans).”
She started writing after her father died when she was at university. “I went mental and a psychiatric nurse suggested I start writing poetry, so I did and realised that using humour and interesting turns of phrase is a great way to insert optimism into something that could be a bit … morose.”
Get there for 7.30pm on Monday night. Jackie’s gig at the Blind Pig starts at 8pm.
