RIGHT TURN by Richard Seymour
The following lines were written many years ago when this country faced decisions that
affected its future survival. Post-Brexit, they have a very contemporary resonance.
........................................................
Though Britannia rules exalted
In our heartfelt hymns of praise
Now we see her standing halted
At the parting of the ways.
To her left a road descending
Through a vaunted land of bliss
But beyond the corner ending
In a bottomless abyss.
To her right a pathway leading
Up a steep and rocky slope
Where the climber, toil unheeding,
Sees the dawning gleam of hope.
While Britannia doubting lingers
May her Guardian Angel's light
Show a myriad ghostly fingers
Only pointing to the right.

Tight rhythms and a rhyme scheme of abab which I'd difficult to manage in such short lines while still remaining on message. Enjoyed the image of "myriad ghostly fingers".
