It was one of those nights

Warm summer

Dark steamy night

Hair trailing half way down my back

The car stereo blares

Out into the dark

As I cruise down country roads and lanes

Hamlet cigars and lighter

In waistcoat pocket

Arm resting on open window

The night breeze

A brief reprise

From the sticky and the hot

Flared jeans cover

Desert boots

Cassette whirrs and clicks

One track ends

Another begins

Guitar kicks in

Hardly sunset strip

No sun tanned or bleached blonde girls

Just another fantasy drive

Lost in music the solid four four beat

The carefully corralled harmonies

I join in the chorus on the bends

Round a corner

A fox lopes across the road

Caught in a moonlight glow

No hurry on a midnight skit

Making me slow

Down a gear

Back up a gear

As he disappears in the trees

And I’m up a hill

Past silent ash and oak

Down the high street and slide into the drive

Home for me in my head

Is where the music is

Keeping me grounded

And alert

Thanks David Ray and Colin for your comments. This is based me coming home some evenings during the hot summers in the mid seventies with one of those nights by the eagles blaring out of the car stereo.

one of those crazy old nights?

this could be the script for any number of 70's adverts - cigars, cigs, jeans, shoes, Ford Capri's

very enjoyable

Great stuff Martin. Just the right flavours of period and place for me.
