a glimpse through the side door of paradise

I was a fatality waiting to happen

unable to resist the temptation

of getting too close to the flames

I walked blindly into the path

of fast movers on love's freeway

you found me

a twisted wreck of torn limbs

and breathed life into my broken soul

your bodhisattva healed

my haemorrhaging heart

and re-tuned it

extracting sweet notes from its core

like a stradivarius

you were Eros

lifting me so high on glittering wings

I plucked stars like apples from the sky

and gorged insatiably until I craved

your fruits so intensely

that the fire of need

killed our passion

leaving the corpse of love

swelled and spent after

another glimpse through

the side door of paradise

As a fan, I noted your reference to Steeleye Dan. Not too long ago, with Ken's permission, I happened to record his performance at a Poetry and music night here in Perth.
Enjoy.

Thanks so much Frances and Colin, wonderful comments and I'm so grateful to you both. Steely Dan, loved them for 40+ years, this poem was partly inspired by the track!
Sorry short reply, internet problems here...

this feels like a follow up to The Heart of the Matter if not a connection of themes or continuation of thoughts. I would definitely echo Frances' comments but with the addition that you have written a damn fine piece of poetry Paul.

I haven't heard 'bodhisattva' since I last played Countdown to Ecstasy by Steely Dan. Not the best quality vid but genius live performance:

Wow, Paul - love this!
Great metaphors.
You stuck with the premise and explored it with imagination and consideration of the senses; visual, audio and tactile.
Very well done.
