Outside the lift,

Just across the hallway,

In one of the adjacent flats

I heard a melodic scale on guitar 

They were clearly a beginner

Like me back in high school

But no longer.

 

It was a C

natural minor scale 

Ascending and descending notes

Brought to mind new adjectives on each play.

Optimistic and ominous

Resolute and resigned

Novel and known.
