Dad Says

Dad Says

It’s not the winning that counts;

It’s all about the taking part;

I shouldn’t seek out glory;

I shouldn’t take defeat to heart;

Enjoy the nomination;

Keep a smile upon your face;

Be magnanimous in losing;

Take a beating with good grace.

But it wasn’t Dad that lost.

It wasn’t him that cleared a space

Making way for this award;

It’s me that’s left with egg on face.

Next time I won’t be premature,

I’ll try to show reserve;

To demonstrate humility.

Dad says he knows what I deserve.

Very wise words Mr Mellor.
Hope you weren't too disappointed. :-)

I love your tongue in cheek humour Steve - it is uplifting. My old dad used to say the following:
'When life's great scorer
Comes to write against my name
He'll mark not if I lost or won
But how I played the game'

I wish we could have put it on his headstone but there wasn't room - we tend to squash them in, in our family - there are just too many of us.

So glad to see that you are gracious in defeat - I hope that you will keep on entertaining us with you poetry though. How did it go in Hebden?

I should probably make it clear that this is the sequel to 'Have I Won' posted at the beginning of the month.
I had it written just in case
