In Another Room

entry picture

How easy it is to lapse

into false memory

lying awake deepening the grooves

of a thought over and over.

Was it really you in that room all those years ago?

Lent over a desk on a hot summer night

listening to the quietened sounds

of a humming city,

feeling closer than ever

to all that was vital in life

as a woman whose thoughts

you couldn't fathom

lay meters from you

naked and asleep.

You were so young then,

how could you have known,

that for all it's promise

this was the moment you'd be working

back towards all of your life.

Much enjoyed, Tom. Your themes are so inclusive of everyone's similar experiences, and yet highlighted with such clarity, and sincerity, and imagination.

Two little things to spot check: perhaps 'leant' and 'its'. Probably typo's, but worth fixing; the work is so outstanding.

I think that the power of this lies in the poem being in the third person as if it is a case to be examined and yet to have so much impact. Clever use of tense Tom - you seem to maximise effect in all your poems and notch up the intensity without any effort, damn you! It's as if you are filming the event drawing us in through the lens.
I just have to mention Peeping Tom (the film) in this context. Worth watching for its impact.

your poems have the knack of sending me back to a different time and place in my life - it's quite uncanny.
