Mostly Welsh
I grew up in Wales
Around the Swansea docks
I walked beneath huge cargo ships
Held up with props and blocks
I was made in Wales
Around the southern ports
I watched the big ships dock
My family guessed my thoughts
I was mined in Wales
Near valleys black with slag
And closing pits and picket lines
With many a mine lodge flag
I was forged in Wales
Watching across the bay
The glow from hellish fires
Roll steel night and day
I was taught in Wales
In Swansea's English Grammar
But little learned of little taught
And left in search of glamour
I had grown in Wales
But sailed off to sea
On ships I'd stood beneath
Dreaming far beyond the quay
I have lived in Wales
Nearly all my years
It's made me what I am
A poet before my peers
I have lived in Wales
Nearly all my years
Its country, myth and culture
Hold both my heart and fears

Thanks, both! Its funny how some poems just write themselves and others are a real struggle to get right! This came from a first line - ultimately the first line of the second verse - that I really liked and which described or led into a sentiment - feeling Welsh although born in England and not speaking Welsh. But bringing the rest together was hard work! I hope you feel that an affinity with the land making me Welsh, came through.
