Rebellion

entry picture

An old standard from many a rally, a journey to my political roots in praise of civil disobedience...the late, great comrade Betty Tebbs once told me this was her favourite poem.

Rebellion

You can keep your Magna Carta -

give me Peasants' Revolt!

From the Peoples' Charter

to the fight for women's votes,

From the Dorset martyrs

in the days of old -

Things get better

when we don't do what we're told.

From free education

and sharing out the wealth

To old age pensions

and the National Health,

Things worth building

rulers want to take away,

But we shall turn the tables

on the rousing, rebel day.

In the struggle for survival

and redemption for the poor

We may suffer many losses

but shall even up the score,

Show the blasted bosses

that we won't be bought or sold,

Things get better

when we don't do what we're told.

So solidly together,

be proud and brave and bold,

Things get better

when we don't do what we're told,

We can seize the hour

when we don't do what we're told,

Victory is ours

when we don't do what we're told!

It's not my design for life, or a manifesto. I reference the Tolpuddle Martyrs, The Suffragettes and the Chartists And am bloody proud to do so. It's just a little poem!

It comes down to what suits us these days. If it suits us, we're happy enough to "do as we're told". But it's just as
well we're forced sometimes, otherwise think of how easy
it could be to restrict one's future opportunities through
not bothering to go to school. And that's just one example
that comes to my idling mind.

Thank you all for your feedback, much appreciated. I performed this piece by request a year ago in Manchester, at the memorial event for Betty T.

In this piece I mention Magna Carta because I wanted to highlight the difference between change that is handed down to people from the lords and masters on high, with the kind of change that comes from "below", grass roots...change that people can bring about for themselves. As Alice Cooper once sang "If that don't suit ya,That's a drag"! Have a lovely day ? folks.

Chris, I like the poem but the sentiments probably belong in the last century now with its great strikes...miners, car industry, newspapers etc

if it's good enough for Betty it's good enough for me!
