There is a hole in the ground

There is a hole in the ground
And we  are all standing around
Staring into it
Wondering what is down there
Wondering who is down there
A hole in the ground
And it’s sparked our curiosity
What lies beneath?
In this abyss
It would be safer
If we all walked away
Just let it be
Let them be
But we don’t
We fetch long sticks and poles
And we poke and we prod
And we can’t leave it alone
We have to know
We need to know
Instead of just letting it be
Letting them be
We have to make waves
Rock the boat
Excerpt our authority
We were here before you
This is our land
You don’t belong here
Unless you follow our rules
Live by our laws
Dress the way we do
There is a hole in the ground
Someone is setting up home
We should make them welcome
We could make them welcome
But we dont

Thank you for the comments. The poem is basicly about how people are suspicious of anyone who appears to be different and how we react to them.

Ray - I agree with your sentiment, and the term 'island mentality' is often used to describe the behaviour. But actually for all the rhetoric from people, me included, we are more welcoming than many of our mainland neighbours, particularly those in eastern Europe.

I think maybe this quite nicely describes an island mentality with all its parochial and inward thinking looking for scapegoats . A really important message and well written.
The ownership of any land is the right to keep other people off it. Looks like a contradiction of welcome I suppose.

I think this is a universal poem about human nature in general. Great perspective.

I like the poem Andrew, even though I am instinctively a stick-poker...albeit a passive one.
