FROM CHRISTCHURCH TO POOLE

entry picture

When folks are at work and the kids all in school

Two or three times we will bike, as a rule

From Christchurch to Bournemouth, then Sandbanks and Poole.

For most of the way it’s a ride by the sea

And easy and flattish for Our Gert and me;

We stop at the Chineside for cups of black tea.

Sometimes we have started from Hengistbury Head

Watching as tides between Mudeford sped

Or browsing the Visitor Centre instead.

It’s said that it won’t change much anytime soon

A trip though to Bournemouth now might change your tune;

You’d quickly have noticed the town’s lost its balloon.

And if we felt lazy the bikes we might ditch

At Sandbanks, the gated retreat of the rich;

I don’t think our lifestyle though we’d want to switch.

Some roadwork and then round the harbour to Poole

The breeze off of Brownsea refreshingly cool,

One of the several Dorset coast jewels.

And come five o’clock it’s the time of day when

We peddle our bicycles homeward; and then,

Arrive back in Christchurch again.

Thanks for your thoughts, MC.
You’re right about the sedate pace Our Gert and me cycle. Give it a couple of years and I reckon I’ll succumb to an electric bike.
As for the balloon, it’s been there in the park for donkey’s years. But had gone when we visited in June. As for Brownsea Island, we haven’t been for over 20 years. We went to see the red squirrels. (We didnt see any).

Cups of black tea? Well now, you're on the button there. I
recall it as a favoured refreshment when, in distant days, I
flirted with time-trials on my bike. Not that I can see you
and Gert racing anywhere against the clock, mind. But
each to his/her own - and age has brought a relief of sorts
to the adventurous antics of youth in my own case...with
the occasional black tea cuppa to add variety to the rest. But hey,
what's that about Bournemouth's
"balloon"?
Keep enjoying those two-wheel (and two feet) excursions!
P.S. I made the trip to Brownsea
Island a couple of times - with a
pal who was to take up a life in
the world of nature - and now lives
down under still doing the same thing.
