If Only....

If Only.....

His eyes held a furtive longing

to which I readily responded

I saw his form which said all

He beckoned and I followed

to an intimacy unbearably intense

A passion driven by desire

no more needs to be said

or laboured on

Since that encounter which was repeated

he sits in my memory and heart

like a distant island of longing

It can never be diminished

it can never be more than hopes dashed

The miles separate us as does life

My consolation is in the play back

the recall of those precious moments

I can still see his eyes

his sturdy masculine physique of maturity

He was not free as I was not free

I shall never see or feel him again

my heart weighs heavily with this thought

I knew from his eyes a yearning

our mutual gaze spoke more than words

A gulf separated us, but our passion

was a profound reality and enduring

Even to this day, even without him

I long for him

Kevin & Rose,
Thank you for your comments. Sorry Rose it was not Dad but O how I would like him to be.

Keith you write with an honesty and candour which is an inspiration. I've recently been reading some new translations of Cavafy, and I find some of your poems comparable.

Cheers Kevin

Lovely piece Keith.

Someone so much loved has to be Dad?

Although it might be going off subject slightly passion does come in many guises not least in poetry, a lot of which I read on WOL. This poem being no exception Keith.
Nice one.

Thank you to all who have read and commented on this poem. Jane and MC you raise interesting ideas worthy of further consideration. Passion can be the instrument of lust which can so easily lead to something heartbreakingly hollow. MC you have hit it on the head.
Thank you again

M.C. Newberry, what you have said here is extremely profound and thought provoking. I think we can all benefit from thinking carefully before we act on any given passionate moment because it can boomerang and be "heartbreakingly hollow" as you say.

This is a powerful evocation of what I imagine was a
youthful encounter with all the power of the momentary
in action. I think we all carry memories of moments that
resonate with us - but wonder if
memories are better than
what may have been the eventual reality?

Is passion but a fashion
That the mind thinks it must follow,
With time gilding the memory
Of something heartbreakingly hollow?

Keith this is beautiful, heartfelt and filled with deep emotion.
Life is nothing more than a collection of unforgettable moments in time, so hold on to them! ??
