Never a Broken Spirit

Never a Broken Spirit

This ageing frame enfolds a spirit undiminished

aching joints, the realisation of age do not vanquish my desire

My appetite, my zest for life has not lost its ardour

a creative spirit pervades my need to express

I am not resigned nor will conform to life´s limitations

my stature suffers no erosion from the elements

A glance in a mirror is a portrait of age

yet within an athlete runs the extra mile

Death may be close at hand but I deny its power

I am blessed with energy, optimism and faith

Unique and self willed I do not cower

the way ahead is clear, the path straight

In times of tribulation I have resorted to products of amelioration

these give temporary assuage but offer no lasting remedy

Those who are close offer affection and encouragement

but at the end of the day I stand alone, as do we all

Do I possess a philosophy or an elixir to thrive

none save a perpetual interest in all I find

Engrossed and intrigued these entice my soul

all of which has little to do with being old

I know what you mean about an aging frame. I understand what my dear old grandmother used to say when she would talk about the spirit willing and the flesh being weak.
Lovely poem Keith

An excellent affirmation of ongoing life - with "age" a
marker of the acquisition of experience and the unextinguished light of inquisitive imagination. Some of
the best work comes in later years when the mind can
use what it has acquired to produce lasting creations
that enrich existence.
