The Master - for Carlos Ezquerra, 1947-2018

entry picture

His hand and eyes he lent to us

For almost five and forty years,

He gave us childhood, hope and truth

And visions of our darkest fears

Exotic heroes, distant times

And swirling planets far away -

He coloured thoughts and drew our dreams

And showed to us another day

He honed his subtle craft like steel

Eschewing easy, common things

And shaped through art our budding minds

With all the grace a master brings

With threads of strangely moving line

He led us to another realm

For his was vision unsurpassed -

And his the boundless strength to dream

And now he lies in Spanish soil

But such as he are never gone;

His lines still move, his colours sing -

The master's legacy lives on.

Excellent piece you have written as a dedication. The last stanza holds its weight in gold, and could be inscribed on an epitaph beautifully.?

Although I have some awareness of the illustrations that
filled magazines devoted to fantasy/futuristic themes,
I was unaware of the name of the subject of this tribute.
It is an art world in its own right, that's for sure, and Snr.
Ezquerra was clearly at the forefront and deserving of these
words of praise.

No one in modern comics could effortlessly create a definitive image like Ezquerra. Exhibit A:

I had to look him up as I'd never heard of him...and with good reason as it seems he was an illustrator of things that I have no contact with. But I like the tribute and the structure of the poem JF.
