Dogmatism
You seem to take a strange pride
in believing that it’s true
your land of invisible people
who only talk to you
you act like it’s okay to deride
such other points of view
as you’d dismiss as “materialistic”
and conjure up strawmen
like: we deny the awe of existence;
know enough to survive
you argue we are cynical
I’m cynical – it’s true.
Frankly, few people I’ve ever met
are more that way than you!
Let’s examine the first point first shall we –
... awe of human existence...
You, who know I put no limits on
all that the cosmos sings
and state that abstract concepts, whilst
not matter, are “things”,
know I’ve figured in such detail
what we seem to be
but retain my fascination
and philosophise on
and investigate with relish
each further mystery
in what would seem to be “the world”
and then, time allowing,
might join you in investigating in
your “land of the fairies”.
Next: only know enough to feed
the needs of... survival.
These are the words of someone
not au fait with the verb: know
and believes he has a soul somewhere
that others are without
I know with certainty two things. Then:
things of which I’m confident,
the rest I’m sure about; after that
I’m open-minded –ish
You see for all this pompous piety,
everyone’s deluded except you
(in your land of invisible people
who only talk to you)
We at least tell you what we believe,
and for why,
instead of insisting it’s true.

I missed this, Dermot. It is really good. Is 'strawman argument' your brainchild, or a common usage I've just missed? Whichever, it is an excellent observation about contentious, useless discussion.
'Written in stone' is hilarious. More like 'hammered' eh?
