The Fallen Arch

The Fallen Arch

I look upon the fallen arch

The human waste of war

The names etched out within the stone

Say what was this all for ?

But while I disagree with war

The matter is complex

Some do not seem to reason things

But act by pure reflex

I don't think we will ever solve

This problem we call war

While fear and greed inside us breed

Two things we should abhor

Always topical in the human story.
Greed, envy, lust for power - and, rarely, sheer necessity...
instigate war. For some, there is a fascination in conflict...almost a blueprint in the human make-up that demands an outlet in aggression...once accommodated by
life and death combat and now, thankfully, diluted into
sporting contests that only very rarely risk death and disfigurement to achieve ascendancy/victory.

This succinct poem charaterises what so many feel in the light of war, particularly during the last century. Have you read Siegfried Sassoons´The Menim Gate?´Your poem echoes his words.

Thank you for this
