Hummingbirds
We feel the difference
the coming of cooler weather
tells us a change is in the air
the hummingbirds know too
and have prepared for journey
no more coming to the feeder
or Turks Cap flowers
their clocks say simply Leave
so off they go
all the way to Mexico
where outlaw gangs roam the border
and murder is common
wisely the hummingbirds are elusive
they leave no back packs or
water bottles behind
they go a different way
a familiar route
south across the Rio Grande
into poor sad Mexico
Hummingbirds will bring them cheer
for they do not know borders
they only know how to survive
and how to bring tiny miracles
to those fortunate enough to see them
magic Tinkerbell's giving happiness
to those so desperately in need.
