Blindfold Regiments

But we have forgotten.
Archduke Ferdinand can't explain
Passchendaele or the Somme.
No evil Hitler or monstrous Nazis
weilded weapons of horror
blunt as a caveman's club but,
the toxic flames of inhumanity grew tall.
There are reasons but,
we don't reach for that can of worms.
There are many to blame
shame on them all but,
sleeping dogs lie.

And sleeping lies dog us still!
The ghastly world wars of the 20th century had their
common roots - that much seems irrefutable. The
militarism that was seen as a virtue was instrumental in
blinding its proponents to the possibilities of defeat whilst
it chose to inflict its horrors on those opposed to its
aggrandizing, aggressive and acquisitive self-belief....a
belief that was ultimately mere self-deception - but at such
malevolent mind-numbing cost to the larger world.

So true Adam. A poignant reflection.
