Bureau'rats

Summoned to their verminous den

you're infected with apprehension

(rather than leptospirosis).

Hoping they've ratted you out

they reveal tiny razorsharp teeth

anxious to gnaw rapidly away at

the rewards of much hard work.

They torment you with taxes

(thus inciting you to moonlight)

penalising you for putting by.

Gleefully imposing gigantic fines

for simply writing on the wrong line

with no intention of evasion.

Sitting at large desks with smug expressions,

beady little eyes alight with malice,

scaly tails hidden beneath swivel chairs,

small grabbing pink paws and twitching

damp pointy snouts ready to sniff out

very minor irregularities or faults

so obviously made in good faith.

Even if hour by hour abusing power

Alas! They can't be sacked. Oh no!

Just transferred to infest another nest.

An idle vicious rodent sub-species.

Where have all the ratcatchers gone?

Thanks Jennifer. You will have gathered I'm pretty happy-go-lucky. Write in rhyme (often humourous) with a grain of truth

Hi Don! Lovely comment -they drove me crazy when we had a family business, and you couldn't even say what you thought of them, 'cos the fines got even bigger!!!!! My husband once did simply put a figure (correct) on the wrong line, and was severely punished for it financially! My son got a good job as a rep, but the company wouldn't sign the contract unless he was registered as rep at The Chamber of Commerce. There they wouldn't register him unless he had a signed contract!!!!! Talk about Kafka! We invented a no. saying it was temporary, so he got his contract, and then he registered and we gave the firm the real no. They incite you to devious methods.
All the best, and I enjoy your stuff.

The ratcatchers have been scared into submission
By this vicious of sub-rodent rat
Who sit high and mighty on their swivel chairs
Cos that's where society's put them at ?

So is it our fault?....
