God bless you, Dad
Do you remember?
When I used to hold my breath, until
my lips turned blue!
And
When we hunted for worms in the sand
and how tightly you held my hand.
When I climbed the rocks and whirlpools
in my jelly bean flip flops: Hop, skip and
a jump - bump, a forehead the size of an egg
then off straight to bed.
When you warned me about that boy; and how
staying overnight, was a trick a ploy to have his
wicked way
And
when you gave me a sub, because I didn’t have
enough to pay.
How too often I tell you off, for saying the wrong thing
when I should be telling you, how much joy you bring.
Sometimes: I tell you to stop being a pest; when I should be saying
that your chicken curry is simply the best!
And
How you always say I love you, before I lay my head to rest.
You always give me advice; and let me make my own mistakes
like the time you gave me driving lessons; and I stepped on the brake
a bit too late.
You tell me to be careful, and always think things through
And
How we dash downstairs in the morning, to be the first to get
to the loo.
You have looked out for me all this time, and you still do
so, I would just like to say
Dad, God Bless You.

I love this poem. It grabs you from the first line, the internal rhyme is delightful. A wonderful poem.
