Poetry on The Lake - International Competition
The little town of Orta San Giulio in the Italian Lakes has a special charm for writers and artists seeking inspiration and tranquillity, and they are welcomed there.
The Italian lakes are, undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful places on earth, and are visited every summer by tourists from all over the world. But the lake in winter is very different; this is a time for those who appreciate delicate tints and iridescent hues rather than the brilliant light of summer. A time to wander the almost deserted, narrow cobbled streets, or sit on silent banks in the morning as the island slowly emerges from its veil of mist; the sound of bells – silvery from the island and bronze from Sacro Monte, a faint echo of plainchant from the nunnery across the waters. Can you see yourself there this October at the awards celebrations?
Poetry on the Lake is an international poetry organisation based on the island at Orta San Giulio in northern Italy. They run an annual competition which, this year, has the suggested (but not obligatory) theme of ‘Mediterranean’ – to be interpreted howsoever you wish. There are three categories; Silver Wyvern (max. 60 lines), Formal Verse (max. 40 lines), and Short Poems (max. 10 lines); the closing date is 15th May, 2010, and prizes will be awarded at the Celebration on the island 1st-3rd October, 2010.
The first prize in the Silver Wyvern category is €500, with three runners-up each receiving €100; and in the Formal Verse and Short Poems categories the first prizes are each €100; the competition is sponsored by Alessi and an Alessi designer bowl will be presented to all winners attending the awards. In addition, first prizewinners will also receive a year’s subscription to poetry magazine ORBIS.
There is a charge to enter, and the fees are as follows: In the U.K. - £8 for the first poem, £6 each for the second and third, and £5 for each poem thereafter. Outside U.K. - €20 (or 20$ in U.S.A. & Canada) for two poems, €10 (10$) per poem thereafter. There is no entry form required, though please read the rules and submission guidelines carefully.
