Mexico Moon
The Mexico moon
shines on its brown dirt
like a round tortilla
baked into the peasants
who work in the sun
the Mexican moon
spotlights the pyramids
shining on the serpents
carved by the children of slaves
Mexican moon
sweeping over the Rio
as brown as the river
or the backs of the swimmers
who cross with only a bundle
the violence spilling over
into border towns
which spill over
into the browner desert
holding secret mass graves
blood on the rocks
escape from the coyotes
the cartels
the pervasive drug culture
bodies hanging from bridges
bodies by the side of the brown road
the moon reminds its people of
the sadness of Mexico
the moon changes
Mexico never does.
