The Gloss Has Gone

Family celebration for kin

and old friends of years past,

mainly unrecognizable with

rheumy poached-egg eyes,

strangely perfect teeth,

and features blurred by time.

But one unmistakable, last seen

sporting skin tight white jeans

oozing testosterone from every pore.

Striding down the main street

with his latest glam-girl in tow,

followed by envious or desiring glances,

and oh so well aware of this!

Still effortlessly straight-backed

the blond thatch now silvery grey.

Lawyer-togged in costly suit

to go with black winged shoes

more suitable for his wake!

Even if the blue has faded now,

a twinkle in once sparkling eyes,

humour, arrogance, intelligence still there.

The years have been generous

although the gloss, alas, has gone

Thanks Hannah! If you 'see it' I can't ask more than that.

A great portrait of a certain type of male.
I see this poem in pictures.

Really like this Jennifer. It says 'just enough', and I love the shade of disappointment in the final line.

Thanks Adam and Brian for the likes, and Philipos for the kind comment. Living abroad, I hadn't seen some of them really for ages, and had to place many of them by clues given out!!!! The really worrying part is that you have to admit they are probably trying hard to place you as well!!!!!.

How well written this and quite an unusual 'now and then' scenario. Doubt I'd now recognise any of my old school chums these decades down the line but some of the moments are quite vivid still. Blessings. P. ?
