A Break In The Wall
A Break in the Wall
A busker plays piano accordion at the cross
Incongruous or perhaps that’s me?
Here to retrace the steps
Of my ancestors?
Well…no not really
Unless they were Roman?
Where was I?
Retracing steps…yes
I have been here before
Oh years before
Resided a stones throw away
Walking the wall
There are ghosts along this wall
Of my own making
Memories
Conversations
“Memories are made of this”
Dean Martin once sang
Italian interlude again
Needing to exorcise the ghosts
Book shop still there
Nothing for me
Nothing
Moving on
Sentry tower stands
Former look-out post
I hear voices
Whispered
Remembered
Give me silence
Horribly modern interlude
Steel bridge
Straddling dual carriageway
Wall demolished
Making way for cars
Progress apparently
Chester Race Course
No horses today
The Dee passes by
Traffic intrudes
Again
Leave me alone
Back on the wall
Cathedral in site
More ghosts
Straying inside
Voices again
Back to the wall
How many times?
Circuits around Chester
Remembering
Looking forward
At the past
It’s alive here
All too alive
Ghosts of Deva on a wall
Gold once found here
Or love?
What goes around
Comes around
Dedicated to all the women I have suggested going for a walk around Chester walls with…at last I poetically salute you! Taken from book THE CHESHIRE POEMS www.deanfrasercentral.com
