Ellisian Fields
Although we stare until our eyes go fuzzy
nothing stirs, no whisker, not a nostril.
The pond has want of life but we live hopeful:
the fringing sedge is dense, the water scuzzy
and these impediments can well excuse the
absence of movement. At least we have a photo,
a snap displaying capybara profiles,

Poem for Nelson Mandela.
I expect everybody’s read enough Nelson Mandela poems by now, but here’s mine anyway...
