Marilyn Monroe's poetry

Hello people. I have never set up a discussion page before as I like to watch from the sidelines quite alot. However, I came across some of Mariln Monroe's poetry recently and was astounded by its fragile beauty and wonder what people think of it. Here is a sample -

"Life

I am both your directions
Existing more with the cold frost
Strong as a cobweb in the wind
Hanging downward the most
Somehow remaining
those beaded rays have the colours
I've seen in paintings-ah life
they have cheated you
thinner than a cobweb's thread
sheerer than any-
but it did attach itself
and held fast in strong winds
and singed by the leaping hot fires
life-of which at singular times
I am both of your directions-
somehow I remain hanging downward
the most
as both of your directions pull me."

I didn't realise she wrote poetry. Yes - this does come as a surprise. She has got stuck with the image of dumb blonde but it looks like there was a heart and a mind there too. For me it brought to mind two similar images, the one from this poem of a cobweb 'hanging downward' and that of a candle in the wind...

Sad but lovely. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

I think you are brave starting up a thread - I've only done it once :) I tend to just join in everyone else's and annoy people - I get mischevious when I'm bored!

Amazing. I know little about Marilyn. I have never seen a film of hers!I think like most, I know her second hand. I would hope that these words are more true than Elton John's more vivid than the images of flying skirts etc. Maybe this is where real thoughts can be expressed (Through poety). To pick up on a fragment, I liked -

Hanging downward the most
Somehow remaining

To me says so much and has so much more behind it,

Thx for starting this off Marianne,

Just come across this, Marianne. Well done for posting it - what an extraordinary poem. Perhaps it should be attributed to Norma Jeane on the basis that this is the real her coming through.

I've never watched a whole MM film all the way through but from the parts I've seen she really could act. Nor do I know much about her, but she was clearly a genuinely talented person with a lot going on inside her - trying perhaps to escape how she was being pigeonholed and used.

I agree that this poem is fragile in its beauty.

'I am both of your directions-
somehow I remain hanging downward
the most
as both of your directions pull me.'

I have always been fascinated by Marilyn and her psyche... I have read several books about her life and watched many of her movies. Marilyn was very bright - she was obsessed with educating herself, and read a lot. She was a beautiful soul who was tormented by her desperate need for love and acceptance.
