reading out loud

In the Guardian Review of Sharon Olds winning the T S Eliot prize with her book 'Stag's Leap' Carol Ann Duffy is quoted as saying: "Duffy said she was delighted to see how proficient the poets had become at performing their poetry to a large audience. "Ten years ago I think they would have been muttering into their jacket sleeves,"
Does this mean a shift in the role of reading poetry out loud? Is it gaining approval in its own write?
If so I think Write Out Loud has been a factor in promoting it.

WOL and open mics in general have to take some credit. It's helpful that many of us by now have seen ourselves on Youtube or at least a friend's phone camera. That can be an eye-opener

Given the topic and Dave's comment, I'm afraid I can't resist :)

Promoting many, poets reading aloud, including some wol poets - such as our very own Mr Bradley.

Below are more poetry recordings, most from a wol night in Bolton;

I agreed with 'nuff said' ;) a point well made. He's definitely unique, though what he offers is not.

I'll stick with poetry.

I'm not into 'skillz' :)

P.S

On those poetry channels/links I added, you should find something of interest. Quite a few WOL poets, a national poetry day. About 9 months worth of poems at differing venues etc.

Is this the future of poetry/performance performance poetry? :)

Possibly a future. Poetry - no more than any other art form - doesn't need to have just one future.

Though frankly if that's a future, I think I'll give that one a miss.

D J Smile, when I got there, as there was a long Morrisons advert first, seems to have a very limited vocabulary, a shaky memory, and relies on repetition an awful lot. I suppose the repetition comes from being 'mixed' and so most of the rhythm and pattern has been put in by mixing and the original was even more empty of interest or content. Hmm, I don't think I 'liked' him.
