Stationary Bike
I went to the gym
to do the routine
on the stationary bike
pedal pedal pedal
pedal to the metal
check the screen
calorie count
102 rpms
2 miles down
1 mile left
heart pumps
blood flows
faster faster
until finally I hit 3 miles
a potential heart attack
in the making
is this healthy?
yet after all that pedaling
all those miles
when I'm done
I am still in the same place
the bike has not moved
guess that's why they call them
stationary
I thought it had something
to do with paper and pen
oh, and by the way
why does everyone who
comes to the gym carry a backpack?
It's like part of their uniform
so they feel important
real gym he-men
muscled men of back packs
a badge of courage
or just baggage
with a mandatory water bottle
some vitamins
and a book on how to
resuscitate stationary bike riders.

Moderation in all things - and that includes exercise, especially when
indulged in advanced age. The groundwork for a healthy later life is
best laid in youth when the body can be prepared - like the sturdy foundations of a building meant to last.
