Poet's Plea
I'm sorry I'm white
but I was born that way
just like you
born black
neither of us had a choice
each of us born at random
with no say in the process
or in the past
we had no choice
we did not pick a side
we simply grew
we went about our life
as best we could
in our own time and place
now we are at each other's throats
each accusing the other
of being the wrong color
of being different
charges of racism
charges of wanton destruction
yet calling each other names
will not change the fact
we are who we are
we cannot change
the color of our skin
but we can change our thinking
find common ground
around a common purpose
we must try harder to be better
human beings
that's really all we are
simply human beings.

It just happens to be the case that I'm white..
These lines contain a good guide for living.
Avoid preconceptions, treat others as you would wish to be treated
yourself and be ready to defend the rights of others, even if you
disagree with what they say or do - as long as these are open to
question and resolution without being at risk of being abused or discarded.altogether. Might is not always right.
