Dog Day

 

The day was hot

Hot and humid

Stretching out

Into a dog day afternoon

 

The boy was young

Young and stupid

Stretching out

Beneath the furnace sun

 

The tarn was cold

Cold and ruthless

Stretching out

Along the sunny banks

 

The swim was exhilarating

Exhilarating and cooling

Stretching out

And heading for the shore

 

The tarn demon was fast

Fast and lethal

Stretching out

To grab the young boy’s legs

 

The cramp was clutching

Clutching and deadly

Stretching out

Along his calves and thighs

 

The water was tranquil

Tranquil and glass smooth

Stretching out

Beneath the summer skies

 

The body was blue

Blue and stiff

Stretching out

Along the pebbled bed

 

The storm was cleansing

Cleansing and accusatory

Stretching out

Along the dark horizon

 

The night was calm

Calm and silent

Stretching out

Into eternity
