I want

I want to see the sea once more;

I want to sit down by the shore.

I want to see the moon, so bright,

Illuminate the beach by night.

I want to feel again the breeze

Caress my face and sway the trees;

I want to breathe the salty air

I want to feel the sea at prayer.

I want to see the little ships

Returning from hair-raising trips;

The rugged crews to disembark

And unload cargoes for a lark.

I want to spy the coastal town

Grow dim each time the lights go down;

I want to see the lighthouse blink

The beach huts painted shocking pink.

I want the world to spread its wings,

To go to where the seabird sings,

To float in silence and, becalmed,

To spend what’s left in peace, unarmed.

These comments are so encouraging! Thank you all very much and to those who clicked the like as well.
Perhaps we shall have some of these things sooner than we think. Let's be optimists!
John, I take your point and see what you mean as I read it again. Who knows? There may be an updated version!

Simple and poignant, especially during a lockdown. An insight into how valuable are the simple things in life when you can’t have them. If I was being ultra-critical, Stephen, I found the rhythm a bit clunky where you introduce the phrase “hair-raising”.

I like the metrical consistency in this poem Stephen, and the growing beauty as it opens up towards the end.
