HUNGRY SOULS
Every morning I cook up a poem
for breakfast
for all you hungry souls
who get up late
but I got behind this morning
and so now I am playing catch-up
I know your stomachs are growling
having no morning poem to digest
but hopefully
this mid-morning snack of words
will tide you over
until you get some real food
in your system
a steady diet of poetry
will satisfy your soul
but at the same time
it leaves you empty
you cannot live only on words
and a poem provides no protein
it is not one of the basic food groups
poetry is non-essential
a feast for the eyes perhaps
but real food is required
before you have a taste
for art.

Your crunchy words came just in time
coated in sugar
and chewy in the middle
I've probably eaten more
than I should have
But you are mistaken
to think poetry an empty replacement
or inadequate diet.
There's moral fibre and meaty issues aplenty
The fruit of other people's reasoning
and vital new tree ants
at least I think that's what we call them.
And no matter how sweet or flowery
poetry has no calories so
speaking of that
it cannot make you fat.
