Walking With Butterflies
Southport in August
Flower Show attracting nature lovers
I am seeking different experiences
Spontaneous decision made
Heading along the promenade
Breathing sea air
Mixed with traffic pollution
Forward into the unknown
Formby my destination
Nobody else around on this footpath
Eveyone too busy viewing horticulture
Yet here we had another kind of nature
Wildflowers resplendent in the sun
Yet today there was extra magic
Butterflies
A veritable cavalcade of butterflies
Flitting from one flower to another
And in so many hues
Blue, red, gold and purest white
They kept me company
Landing on my shirt
To hitch a ride for a few metres
Then back about their business
Catching glimpses of the beach from within these dunes
I would see only one fellow human on that path
During the hour-long trek
Oblivious to all going on around him
Plugged into music as he was
I assumed that is what his giant headphones were about
Maybe he listened to alien spaceship transmissions?
We can never be sure
I just guessed it must be music
Once more to tranquillity
And my new lepidopteran friends
Formby is reached
I would have bought an ice-cream if I ate dairy
Instead I rested a few moments on the sand
To head back once more
Walking my own footsteps in reverse
Considerably less butterflies now
Oddly
Where did they all go?
For the next hour I saw few
The moment passed
Wishing I had taken photos earlier
Yet memory of the magic stayed
