DARK ARTS

Musicians, like sluts

will exploit their art

for its own sake

but chiefly to satisfy those who will employ them.

Will turn a pretty tune

reach deep into the secret box

bring succour to a welcome room

make the world a better place

and when the moment passes

are soon forgotten.

To raise that all important profile

the clever ones get better pimps

broadcast via screens and speakers

whilst in the haunts of caverns and bars

the lower echelons ply their trade

then when it's time to go

clutch their cases black as night with guilt and pleasure

plush lined for protection of their hard won treasure.

Thank you as ever Stephen G and Stephen A and Holden!

Adam, that is definitely true; at one time to "go pro" was the desire of many a musician but in retrospect it's safer and probably less wearing on mind and body not to. I've worked with many amateurs as paid work tailed off and the market opened up . Even colleges train people to a high standard to flood the streets with buskers ( apart from covid restrictions) ! Glad you liked this one.

Tony, It's funny how certain details stand out in a life. I'm glad you spotted the couplet. Music should bring hope and sustenance but there is a seamy side to it, as well as a sad one.

Wonderful poem, Ray. Fame is certainly no meritocracy. One of my musical heroes is John Martyn, a tumbleweed moment for many people, I suspect. Rounded off with a winning couplet. Envious. Tony.

Good one.

I never forget those who are a whizz-kid at tickling the ivories
or make themselves very, very good on the Spanish guitar.
They get to know music intimately because they love it but never think of going on stage.
I don't forget them because they are the majority of musicians.
