Captain Sir Tom

Last years poem which I adapted into a get well message. I have just seen the sad news about his passing. I will leave my poem here as a tribute.

What a legend Captain Sir Tom has become
The hearts of all our nation he has won
To walk a hundred laps was his only goal
At 100 years old, it should have taken its toll
But Captain Sir Tom took it all in his stride
Filling isolated days with cheer and pride

The news of his challenge travelled far and wide
The media shared his story, proud family by his side
At the start a thousand pounds was the dream
Like a lifetime ago those lockdown days must seem
Thirty nine million pounds raised for our national health
In such a short time, amassing astonishing wealth

A guard of honour lined his one hundredth lap
A mark of respect for such a wonderful chap
A Pride of Britain award, his name on a train
A letter from the queen and fly past planes
A world war two medal and a number one song
Michael Ball and all the country singing along

Two books followed one for young, one for old
Tomorrow will be a good day, a story to be told
His life story shared with Piers Morgan on TV
The greatest commendation was still yet to be
An award from the Country he so bravely served
A Knighthood from the Queen, so well deserved

Captain Sir Tom now has his own foundation
Their mission to ease loneliness across the nation
Encouraging people to share messages of positivity
To spread words of hope and raise funds for charity
Helping others to believe after dark there is light
Tomorrow will be a good day and the future is bright

With hope in our hearts and heads held high
We will ride this storm towards the golden sky
In years to come they will find it hard to believe
The story of a 100 year old man and what he achieved
Our national treasure, our hero and our number one
We salute you Sir, give praise and thanks for all you have done

Admiration and affection shine through in equal measure. Good one!
Captain Sir Tom
With admirable aplomb
Took fame in his stride -
With humble grace and selfless pride.?

Your poem would be a fitting tribute read out at his funeral, send it to his family. I am sure they will warm to your tribute.
