The Lap of Luxury

The Lap of Luxury

They live in the lap of luxury

with wealth and comfort unlimited

For them money is no problem

as it imposes no restrictions

There is nothing they cannot afford

no obstacles lay in their path

They become isolated and alienated

in their thinking and values

Privilege unearned comes their way

status is of their essence

They inhabit mansions of opulence

and live only for themsleves

These same people of great fortune

become highly introspective

They live to the exclusion of others

immersed in their own lives

They magnify their problems

and display their pain in public

Their lives occupy the headlines

as the media pays them homage

Common folk become absorbed

in their ongoing SOAP operas

This interest adds layers to their wealth

and bolsters their life styles

Further down the social ladder

a single mother sits in her high rise flat

Her total wealth is Universal Credit

the PTSD soldier sleeps in a shop doorway

Under nourished children turn to drugs

their lives are demeaned by poverty

Little media attention is afforded to the poor

as they are little more than a mere statistic

Their voices reach only thin air

as they suffer deprivation

Mental health issues are real and rife

as misery is coped with daily

Let us give our attention to the unattractive

and let the wealthy fend for themselves

as they already have their fortune

I love this?? I do not think anyone in this world should go to bed hungry or without anything essential.

Beautifully orchestrated theme, and every word rings true. The marginalised don't make for interested reading, sadly. Agree with what Stephen says that it is a cutting criticism of the times we live in.

I like this, Keith. It is a sharp and forensic dissection of modern life.
