THE FALLEN

entry picture

Unlike ourselves they’ll not grow old

Now empty shells where once they sold

Their stuff in every High Street town

Their names respected and of renown;

For these victims of this viral year

Some raise a glass, some shed a tear;

Department stores know how this feels

Ask Debenhams, John Lewis, Beales

Oasis, Warehouse, Thorntons closed

And Evans for your fatties’ clothes

Your fashionware like H&M

(So sad to see the back of them!)

Carphone Warehouse, Mothercare,

Mike Ashley’s range of crap sportswear;

The empire of the King of Mean

The snot-ball that’s Sir Philip Green-

Miss Selfridge, Topman, Topshop too

And Dolly Perkins down the loo.

And in the meantime thundering on

We feed the beast that’s Amazon.

Thanks, Stephen. I am as guilty as many in using Amazon and EBay. But for clothes I tend to patronise charity shops.
And thanks for the Like, Leon.

One of your best, John. Not sure where I'd go shopping now. Would probably have to hi-jack a delivery van and take a lucky dip.

Thanks for your thoughts, Jennifer. Amazon have certainly capitalised on the pandemic and who can blame them. Ultimately it is we who are responsible for feeding them.

Unfortunately so true. Here in Italy we have never had the chains of department stores quality and low quality, that there were in Britain, but so many small shops have closed because of Covid, Outlets, and the rising costs of renting premises, as MC says. We have the franchises, Calzedonia, Swatch, Foot Locker, etc., but most are now in shopping malls. Now you find the same shops, and goods all over Europe. When I came out to Italy in the 60s, shopping was a delight, as everything, or most things, were produced locally, and the range and diversity was incredible. Jennifer

Thanks, Graham. He doesn’t owe us anything, does he? And anywhere but Man U or the Arse.
No doubt councils could have done more to protect the High St by shelving or reducing rents, MC, but that would have affected their ability to provide services. The bigger culprits are the virus and ourselves; we are responsible for the permanent change in shopping patterns.
And thanks for the Likes, Holden, Stephen, Aviva, Kevin and Greg.

Maybe the decline and disappearance of the "giants" - overtaken
by circumstance and an absence of marketing foresight in this
online age could well pave the way for a return by the smaller
individual enterprises - from which, it may be said. most, if not all
of the giants evolved originally. But then there's the neglect of the
high street by local councils, readily granting permission to the big
guns for out of town shopping centres while overseeing rows of
boarded-up shops in town centres and rapacious demands from
property landlords that can deter start-up enterprises these
days. What happened to social responsibility and the enactment
of laws to ensure that the market health of the high street is
maintained for general benefit, but not least for those most
dependent on local shopping outlets due to personal need and
lack fo mobility? Councils have a lot to answer for in this regard..

I think you've got them all in there JC. Nicely written! Farewell Harry!
