17½ + 1 Day
For most of her life
She had held the dream
Of walking up an aisle in white,
And she still being a virgin
Until her wedding night.
But now she wonders if
Maybe this image of hers
Wasn’t just a little too trite.
Last night the boss she loves
Had held her in his arms,
And confessed to being
Totally head over heels.
Together they had laughed
That he didn’t know why.
She’s clumsy and scatty,
And had given him
Nothing but cheek.
Now this morning
She meets him in the office,
The one she had re-arranged
Without his bidding.
And not necessarily
For the better!
He pretends there’s nothing
Between them
And gives her dictation
That turns into gobbledegook.
They burst into laughter,
And struggle to keep
From each other’s arms.
“So young,” he says, “seventeen.”
To which she adds,
“And a half.”
Muscles tremble at his mouth.
“Of course,” he agrees.
He really mustn’t laugh.
He knows of her dream held dear
And asks when she would like
To marry him.
Tomorrow is her answer.
She just can’t wait,
He finds her guilelessness
Irresistible
And impossible….
Finally he suggests in six weeks.
She agrees she may last that long.
If only she could come
Complete with a perpetual
Bucket of cold water!
