Talented & Gifted

When I was in school
there was no program for
the talented & gifted
the only gift giving I knew of
was at Christmas
nevertheless even if there had been
a program for talented & gifted
I would not have qualified
because I was neither talented nor gifted
but basically just average
I only developed a talent late in life
for this poetry thing
which some would is more like a scourge
than a talent
As for as the gifted part
I was gifted with mediocrity
I excelled at it
I made straight C's
I was never gifted with any talent
other than humor
and now you see where that got me
a gift most people say
should be put back in the box
and returned for not working.

There's a saying about there being a time and place for everything - and I have often thought that this should be a
source of comfort and hope in life. Too much emphasis is
placed upon expectations of great things from the young.
They only know what is discovered from books or is taught to
them. The creative ability is rare indeed, so rare that it is often
placed in the category of "gifted" or "genius".

After sitting through years of prizegiving ceremonies at grammar school at which I won nothing, my dad said to me “For Christ’s sake tell me what you’re good at and I’ll give a prize for it”.
