Last To Leave

   A golden charm
lights upon the flower
  milkweed is its lure

   finding this place
by compass sun
a flight of a million wings

   making their way
 to Mexico
   a journey of no return

this is the lone holdout
   a straggler
reluctant to leave

it sips the last of sweetness
  then finally flutters away
almost 2 weeks behind

 a sad farewell
   to one so small
 its gift of beauty spent

a poem with wings
   a story of one
 the last to leave.

Wow! This is really good. The first verse in particular is beautiful.
Always found it unbelievable that creatures so apparently fragile could survive such an incredibly long journey.

Monarch! I love it! Poor fella. I saw one just like this and thought the same thing.

A beautifully crafted poem with a certain poignancy as one recalls the delicacy of the natural world.

Thanks for this

Keith
