A Decent Folk

A Decent Folk

We must not allow ourselves to be corrupted by the

age we live in

Nor to be the victims of fear and the words

of endless discouragement

We are a decent and compassionate people

often misled

But we remain who we are, a people who recognise

what is good and right

A people prepared to defend freedom and justice

against tyranny and oppression

An island race not monochrome or bigotted

but those who pull together

We have given to the world our cherished language

and many aspects of our rich culture

From the height of Imperial Splendour we stand as equals

to those we have governed

Surely amongst our nation do we find

goodness, humility, gnerosity and kindness

and a willingness to say we were once wrong

but want to make amends

A thoughtful and interesting poem, Keith. I believe that human beings are basically decent. It's just circumstances and the temptation of easy solutions which drag society down sometimes.

Banging our own drum certainly has its place in the context of
world history - with the emphasis on "world". Has there ever
been an empire that has achieved so much and handed it back
- adorned by the benefit of law, science and democratic government? This despite (or perhaps because of) our own centuries of internal conflict and bloodshed that obtained our
mental awareness of the cost of the necessity for finding a
way for our peoples across the UK to achieve a successful harmony of respect, recognition of other values and the common ground that saw us become a beacon for many
in the world...past, present (check that out!!!) and no doubt in the future. But our first duty is to look to ourselves again if we
are to be able to look to helping others in this rapidly evolving
era of world affairs. Everything in existence has a breaking
point and heaven forbid that we exceed our own and descend
into the chaos of disappointed expectations. .

Stephen and Gail,
thank you. I believe this to be true. We are good and decent folk no matter what others may say. I personally hold firm to this.
Thank you both

Beautiful, elegant and true. At least, I want to believe that it is. Thanks Keith.
