A Decent Folk
A Decent Folk
We must not allow ourselves to be corrupted by the
age we live in
Nor to be the victims of fear and the words
of endless discouragement
We are a decent and compassionate people
often misled
But we remain who we are, a people who recognise
what is good and right
A people prepared to defend freedom and justice
against tyranny and oppression
An island race not monochrome or bigotted
but those who pull together
We have given to the world our cherished language
and many aspects of our rich culture
From the height of Imperial Splendour we stand as equals
to those we have governed
Surely amongst our nation do we find
goodness, humility, gnerosity and kindness
and a willingness to say we were once wrong
but want to make amends

A thoughtful and interesting poem, Keith. I believe that human beings are basically decent. It's just circumstances and the temptation of easy solutions which drag society down sometimes.
