UNEXPLAINED WEIGHT LOSS

A reduced version of myself

looks back from the mirror,

an unexplored unexpected province

old fruit withering on the vine.

As a precaution I try to seal all the entries

and exits of doubt

with hope and listless faith such as you find

in empty churchyards, behind locked oak doors

and all my veins stand out to enhance the effect.

The internet searches for me an answer

underlying causes: how to build muscle,

when to seek help,

like a detectorist I remain alert

looking for treasure in the dirt.

Just to come back Mark. I have certainly had tests for the usual suspects but always ok. Yes there is im sure a large element of feeling useless after ceasing useful activities at the beginning of the pandemic including the social framework. An ongoing back problem flared up too. The stomach is a very sensitive animal and I think an overactive digestion depletes the nutritional value retained from the food. Anyway, I do appreciate your concern, it helps to have that sort of support!

Hang in there Ray. Weight loss is a strange thing. Not always
predictable in cause and effect. In my late retirement I dropped
from 17 stone to around 12 stone at a height of well over 6ft.
My original concerns were placated by the knowledge of my
own advancing years and changes in life style and diet (including no longer enjoying regular pints of beer and fattening foods) ---hastened on, I will add by health nurse
advice/warnings about pre-diabetes, blood pressure etc. plus
ongoing medication. Ironically. despite the various obligations
endured, I've never felt any obvious medical feeling of "illness"
- hence my observation about how needless worry CAN be
a debilitating companion and health checks a useful guide to
dealing with what life throws our way as the years pass. I do recall that you
and I are of similar age. Good luck - to us both!! :-))

Many thanks for your support everyone. A moment of truth in the mirror stitched together with self doubt is about it. There are so many facets to the problem, but the helplessness is of course the brick wall and the great sea of uncertainty that surrounds it. Plus of course the advice for losing weight is everywhere.
Graham, the NHS is itself monitored by a sort of screening process to get anything conclusive in spite of tests.

Leon, I enjoyed your take here. Really kind of you. I've tried everything apart from jumping off Beachy Head.

Thanks Mark. There is a sort of grey area where the worry overlaps the physical and merges in. Confidence too drains away and a sense of self disgust can take over. Plus the winter cold penetrates to old bones.

Thanks Stephen. I'm still here that's the main thing.
Thank you for the like Holden.

Look after yourself, Ray. As Graham says, the doctor is best placed to help.

Obviously, the degree and time involved become relevant. Age
itself alters the metabolism and affects the rate of tissue loss
as we move through the later years. But it's always sensible to
get the equivalent of an MoT on the physical mechanics, Needless worry is as debilitating as any illness and prevention
in both is always best policy.. Good health!!

I hope you're okay Ray.
Although Dr Google has many answers, your doctor is the best port of call, before you drive yourself loopy!
